Between 2005 and 2015 major structural renovations were made inside and outside, including water drainage systems and seismic stabilization to mitigate earthquake damage. Construction was supervised by Wright’s son Lloyd Wright, and the project brought a young Rudolf Schindler to Los Angeles. Due to intense differences between Wright and Barnsdall, only three buildings were constructed, and Barnsdall rarely occupied her residence. In 1927, she donated the property to the City of Los Angeles for use as an art park. An interesting feature is the mitered glass corners at the windows; an early idea Wright later used at Fallingwater. After a major restoration by the City (1974 to 1976) it became a public museum. It was among the first structures to be designated as a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission in 1963. In doing so, she provided an accessible arts center to the community that incorporated and preserved the famous Hollyhock House as a crucial component. Aline Barnsdall’s pioneering vision gave birth to the California Modernism movement and helped grow the careers of notable architects including Wright, Schindler, and Neutra — all of whom were instrumentally involved in the project. Wright is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of the 20th century, and the sites in the group inscription span his influential career. The improvements also included a major restoration of a guest house, known as “Residence A.” A cantilevered balcony on the north side of the structure, which had fallen away, has been fully re-created, with a steel frame to ensure its longevity.
“After a $4 million restoration completed in 2014, the property is an important historical revelation for first-time visitors and regulars alike. Floors, windows, doors, decorative molding, and long-forgotten paint colors were recreated with utmost attention to detail,” said Ed Avila, President, Project Restore. Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned by oil heiress Louise Aline Barnsdall to design the Hollyhock House as part of the avant-garde theatre and cultural complex called Olive Hill. The complex was planned to be an artistic and cultural hub in Los Angeles; however, only the residence and two apartments were actually built.
The Hollyhock House, located in the East Hollywood neighborhood, was completed between 1919 and 1921 and is considered one of Wright’s most important early works in Southern California. There are more than 1,000 World Heritage sites around the world, and the group of Wright sites is now among only 24 sites in the United States. In 1927, Barnsdall gave Hollyhock House, 12 acres, and the Residence A guest house to the City of Los Angeles. Now with two Wright-designed houses, the Municipal Art Gallery, a theater, and art centers (all operated by the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs), Barnsdall Park has become the dynamic arts park that Aline Barnsdall had envisioned for Los Angeles. California captivated both Barnsdall and Wright, and here the architect had the opportunity to develop a new regional expression, which broke from the acclaimed Prairie style he had developed in the Midwest. He took inspiration from building precedents native to the Southwest—the Pre-Hispanic and the Pueblo.
